Mission
Society for Equity increases access to tangible socioeconomic support, healing, and transformative justice to disrupt cycles of violence and incarceration through wealth building and wellbeing.
Background
The criminal legal system furthers the trauma experienced by both victims and perpetrators of crimes and fails to heal the root causes or impacts of violence. Returning from jail and prison with little access to resources ensures that individuals remain trapped in the cycle of poverty, violence, and incarceration. This system disproportionately targets Black and brown communities and perpetuates the racial inequities in this country.
In NYC there are thousands of individuals released from jail/prison every month with nowhere to go, no food, no clothes, and very little support. Lack of access to basic needs leaves people with few choices beyond the street or jail. There is a desperate need for tangible help.
